Gaw

Gaw

The Gaw was a large bomber and transport aircraft developed by the Principality of Zeon for operations within Earth's atmosphere. Powered by a thermonuclear reactor driving 18 thermonuclear jet engines, it had nearly infinite operational range. However, its design, based on computer simulations like the Dopp, made it incapable of sustained flight through lift alone. Even at full speed, 30% of its lift came from downward jet thrust. Steering was achieved exclusively through its vertical tail stabilizer, which rendered it sluggish and with low mobility.

Classified as an "attack aircraft carrier," the Gaw combined its mobile suit and aircraft deployment capabilities with heavy armament. It featured three twin mega particle cannons operated manually by gunners and was capable of carpet bombing. The Gaw was designed to transport and deploy mobile suits that lacked land-based long-distance mobility. It could carry three mobile suits in a forward fuselage deck and up to eight Dopp fighters, housed in hangars at the base of each wing (four per wing).

The deployment process required the Gaw to reduce its speed to about 100 km/h, a vulnerability that made it an easy target for enemy forces. At the rear of the aircraft, a dedicated deck allowed the Komusai—a reentry capsule—to dock and launch while airborne. This capability significantly improved the Komusai's survival rate. When the Komusai deck was sealed, the forward mobile suit deck doors would open for operations, enabling simultaneous management of both functions.
