The upgraded version of the Astelion takes Project TD's vision to the next level by completely abolishing all fuel-based propulsion systems. Instead, it relies entirely on the Twin Tesla Drive, achieving a propellantless mechanism for deep-space cruising. This makes the upgraded Astelion a significant step toward realizing Project TD's concept of advanced spacecraft capable of independent operation in outer space.
However, this shift introduces substantial challenges for a single pilot to manage, leading to the retrofitting of the Astelion into a two-seater model. In this configuration, Tsugumi joins Ibis, serving as the fire-control operator and reducing the burden on the main pilot during high-speed maneuvers and combat.
Despite these improvements, the retrofitting is essentially a stopgap measure, leaving underlying issues such as frame stability unresolved. While the upgraded Astelion achieves remarkable propulsion and maneuvering capabilities, it remains a transitional machine on the path toward the fully realized ideals of Project TD.
