《天獄篇》在2014年12月12日「超級機器人大戰 新作發表會」正式發表。《天獄篇》初回封入特典則是作為《時獄篇》外傳，只有Z系列（包含第2次Z）原創角色及機體以及寶玉登場的《第3次超級機器人大戰Z 連獄篇》（全15話），並附有可以用來下載的下載碼。 天獄篇的宣傳詞為「掃滅吧，無盡的天之獄炎。」
